Holiday Hotel Narrowboats

Canal hotel boats are generally paired as a motorised boat and an unpowered 'butty'. They cruise together in tandem and sometimes 'breast up' at night.

Which hotel boat cruise should you choose? This is the most difficult decision for a prospective guest to make as every cruise has its own special attractions; each canal and river has its own particular charm.

In general, cruises on canals offer more opportunities to be active - to help the crew if you wish through the locks, or just walk the towpath. On rivers, particularly the Thames, there are more historic places to see, and sometimes more opportunities for sightseeing.

The modern hotel boats are centrally heated, so you will still be comfortable whatever the weather.

The price of the cruises on most hotel narrowboats generally includes full board; including breakfast, lunch and dinner together with mid-morning coffee, afternoon tea, and may even offer a glass of wine with dinner, a comfortable cabin with all linen, towels and soap. In short, everything you would expect from a good hotel.

Most hotel narrowboats have licensed bars aboard however, the price does not include your bar bills, car parking or entrance fees to local attractions.

A holiday on a narrowboat hotel is generally informal and storage space, though ample, is limited so don’t take too much with you. It is suggested that you include comfortable, casual clothes, a warm jumper for cooler evenings and waterproofs. Take some soft-soled shoes to wear on board and tougher shoes or walking boots if you intend to walk the towpaths.

Don't forget your camera and lots of film or memory cards, and possibly binoculars for observing the varied wildlife. A torch will be useful for evening sorties from the boat.

If you take your camera or mobile phone don't forget your charger!
