Bridgewater Canal Location and basic information
The Bridgewater Canal is also known by many boaters as 'The Duke's Cut' after
its original owner Francis Egerton, the third Duke of Bridgewater.
A wide lockless canal from Preston Brook to Manchester's Castle Quay officially
ending at Ducie Street Junction, with the Ashton Canal and the Rochdale Canal
at the top of a flight of locks known as 'The Rochdale Nine'.
The canal is connected to the Rochdale Canal in Manchester, the Trent and
Mersey Canal at Preston Brook, south-east of Runcorn, and to the Leeds and Liverpool
Canal (Leigh Branch) at Leigh. It connected with the River Mersey by locking
down at Runcorn but has since 1966 been cut off by a slip road to the Mersey
Silver Jubilee Bridge.
The beginning of the Bridgewater Canal is at Preston Brook - Categories contents
are listed from the beginning of the canal, canal branch or canal arm
Note - The Bridgewater Canal is not managed by British Waterways, it is managed
by the Manchester Ship Canal Company

A short walk from bridge 58 on the Leigh Branch of the Bridgewater Canal.
We visited the Astley Green Colliery Museum for about an hour and a half in July
2007 and apart from the steam winding engine and headgear the small museum building
houses many interesting mining exhibits.
