Kennet and Avon Canal Location and basic information
The Kennet and Avon Canal is a broad canal in southern England. The name may
refer to either the route of the original Kennet and Avon Canal Company, which
linked the River Kennet at Newbury to the River Avon at Bath, or to the entire
navigation between the River Thames at Reading and the Floating Harbour at Bristol,
including the earlier improved river navigations of the River Kennet between
Reading and Newbury and the River Avon between Bath and Bristol.

The 55ft long 'Rose of Hungerford' was purpose-built for the Kennet & Avon
Canal Trust along the lines of a traditional canal barge. Beautifully painted
and decorated with roses and castles in the style of former working boats, the
'Rose of Hungerford' is based at the old and picturesque Canal Wharf, Hungerford.
Times : 14.30 Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays from April to end
of October. Also Wednesdays during June, July, August and September and an additional
11.30 trip on Wednesdays in July and August and Saturdays and Sundays in

and has a range of exhibits about the conception, design, usage and eventual
commercial decline of the Kennet and Avon Canal, as well as its subsequent restoration.
The museum is located at Devizes Wharf, off Couch Lane, within easy walking distance
of the centre of Devizes and the famous Caen Hill Flight of 29 locks. It is operated
by the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust which also has its headquarters and a shop
within the Canal Centre.
