Oxford Canal (Northern Section) Location and basic information

The beginning of the Oxford Canal (Northern Section) is at Hawkesbury, running south in the direction of Braunston - Categories contents are listed from the beginning of the canal, canal branch or canal arm.

The Oxford Canal northern section and Oxford Canal southern section are separated by a the Grand Union Canal between Braunston Turn and Napton Junction, a distance of almost five miles.

The northern section of the Oxford Canal is just over 21.5 miles with just 3 locks from Hawkesbury Junction (AKA Sutton Stop) MAP to Braunston Turn and is part of the Warwickshire Cruising Ring.

The canal passes through rolling open farmland, largely following the contours in the style of James Brindley.

The Oxford Canal passes through the northern environs of historic Rugby.

Rugby - A market town in Warwickshire, on the Oxford Canal and River Avon.

Places of interest in the town include: The Rugby School Museum (Charge Applies), which has audio-visual displays about the history of Rugby School and of the town. The combined free entry Art Gallery and Museum - MAP - Info on this FREE Museum and others in Warwickshire. The art gallery contains a nationally-recognised collection of contemporary art. The museum contains, amongst other things, Roman artefacts dug up from the nearby Roman settlement of Tripontium. The Rugby Football Museum (Charge Applies), where traditional rugby balls are hand made. It contains much rugby football memorabilia. The town has statues of three famous locals: Rupert Brooke, Thomas Hughes and William Webb Ellis.

Places of interest around Rugby include: Brandon Marsh, Coombe Abbey and Coombe Country Park, Dunchurch (Historic village), Draycote Water (Reservoir and nature reserve), Rugby School, Stanford Hall, Ryton Organic Gardens, Benn Hall (music venue).

Braunston - MAP - A very well known historic canal centre. Pleasant walk upto and beyond the church, which can be seen for miles around as it is on top of a hill and has a tall spire.
