Places to visit and things to do or see on the Staffordshire & Worcestershire (Staffs & Worcs) Canal
Stourport-on-Severn Basin - During the late 19th century, Stourport became
a popular summer destination for the industrial workers of the West Midlands
conurbation, who came for its riverside pleasure parks, boat trips, and caravan
parks. Since the end of the Second World War, and the nationalisation of the
canal system Stourport has been in steady decline. However the growth in leisure
boating and canal barge ownership and holidays has seen the revitalisation of
the Stourport-on-Severn canal basins.
Botterham Staircase Locks - The two locks at Botterham are a staircase, locks
placed close together which share gates.
Bratch Lock Flight - The Bratch locks are not a staircase
but there is only a few feet separating them. There are side ponds which control
the water which empties from the lock above. There is also an original octagonal
toll house where the present day lock keeper is still based.
Smestow Valley Nature Reserve - Smestow
Valley and the Black Country Urban Park follows a south-westerly route from Oxley
to Wightwick along the disused Wolverhampton - Kingswinford - Stourbridge railway
line. It's a haven for wildlife with its meadows and over 150 acres of woodland.
The reserve is also close to the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal and Smestow
Brook. Pathways are flat and in most places well surfaced making them easy for
walkers and cyclists. Smestow Valley Nature Reserve can be accessed from Tettenhall
Road, Castlecroft Road or Compton Road Bridge / Compton Lock Bridge (60) and
Compton Lock. Link

Dunstall Park Race course, Wolverhampton
Fordhouses Cutting - Bridge 67 to the new Country Park there
is a narrow cutting just over half a mile long cut through solid rock. 'The Wolverhampton
Narrows' is not wide enough for boats to pass but there are two well placed
but tight passing places
Penkridge - Market
Tixall
Wides - Tree lined broad waters where the canal
opens out to become more like a lake with views of the original Tixall Hall Gatehouse.
Great for watching water birds at any time of year and the occasional Barn Owl
at dusk over adjacent fields.
