Guide to the Waterways: Birmingham & the Heart of England No. 3 (Waterways
Guide)
The beginning of the Trent and Mersey Canal is at Derwent Mouth in Derbyshire
- Categories contents are listed from the beginning of the canal, canal branch
or canal arm.
The Trent and Mersey canal was built (opened 1777), as the name implies, to
link the River Trent at Derwent Mouth to the River Mersey, via
the Bridgewater Canal, which it joins at Preston Brook in Cheshire. Mileposts
measure the distances between Preston Brook and Shardlow, around a mile short
of Derwent mouth.
The idea of a canal connection from the Mersey to the Trent, conceived as "The
Grand Trunk", came from canal engineer James Brindley and his planned 'Grand
Cross' of canals connecting the Trent and Severn, and the Mersey and Thames rivers.
